Tutorialize guide
Tutorialize turns a choreo video into a tutorial: mirror, slow speed without the pitch changing, the 8-count on screen and a loop of the part that won't stick. Here it is step by step, with two demos you can play with.
Contents What Tutorialize is
What Tutorialize is
Tutorialize is for when you want to learn a choreo from a video: your teacher's, one from a camp class or one you saw online. Turn on mirror so you can follow it as if the teacher were in front of you, slow it down without the pitch dropping, see the count from 1 to 8 on screen and loop the counts that keep tripping you up.
It works as a three-step wizard: Open the video, Set the tempo and Practice & export. All three are at the top; tap one you've already been through to go back to it.
Everything happens in your browser: the video never leaves your device. The first time you come in from a browser you don't need to sign up (the visit is free until you close the tab); to come back and to export the video, create your account for free and get 1 month of Pro.
Step 1: open the video
-
Choose the video
Press Choose a video or drag it onto the box. An mp4, mov or webm will do, and it needs the music: the count comes from it.
-
Wait while it reads the audio
A bar appears with «Finding the pulse of…» and the file name. Tutorialize listens for the hits in the music (mostly kicks and snares) so that your taps later land right on the beat.
-
It moves on to step 2 by itself
When it's done, it takes you straight to setting the tempo. That's where you see the video.
Step 2: set the tempo
You set the tempo yourself: nobody knows better than you where the «1» of that choreo is. Tutorialize just gives you a hand: it snaps each tap to the nearest hit in the music.
-
Hit play
Press Play (or tap the video) and listen for a bit until you've got the groove.
-
Tap along
Tap the big TAP TO THE BEAT button with the music, starting on a «1»: at least 4 taps, ideally 8. Below it you can see how many you've done. Your first tap becomes count 1.
-
Finish with Done
Done lights up from the fourth tap. If you get to 12, it closes by itself. Cancel clears your taps so you can start again.
-
Fine-tune the BPM
Next to «BPM» you have − and +: they move the tempo up or down one at a time, without moving the «1». Use them if you notice the count drifting ahead or behind over the video.
-
Check and carry on
Below it is the strip of counts: on this step, tapping a count takes you to that moment in the video. If something's off, Tap it again. When you're happy, Next.
Press Play so the beat starts.
Step 3: mirror, speed and count
Step 3 is where you practise. The video starts paused; press Play or tap it to start and stop. The settings sit below it, in three rows:
-
Speed
×0.25, ×0.5, ×0.75 or ×1. The music slows down without dropping in pitch: it sounds the same, just slower. Free gives you ×0.5 and ×1; ×0.25 and ×0.75 are Pro.
-
Mirror
It's on by default: the video shows as in a mirror, so your right is the teacher's right, and the MIRROR badge appears top right. The count doesn't flip. Turn Mirror off if you'd rather see it as it is.
-
Counter
Counter turns the count display over the video on or off.
-
Count
In Count you choose how you count: 1·2·3 (beats only), with «and» (the beat and its «and») or e·&·a (four per beat, Pro).
The count display is a dark pill at the bottom centre: the big number gives a little kick on every beat, the «1» shows in gold and the offbeat syllable appears beside it. The 8 dots tell you where you are in the eight; with «and» or e·&·a, the current beat's dot flashes two or four times, once per subdivision.
Looping on the strip
Below the settings is the strip of counts: one cell per beat, with the «1» of every eight in blue and a line before it. The count that's playing is highlighted, and you can scroll the strip with your finger or the wheel to get to another part.
-
Mark where it starts
Tap the count where the loop starts. Above it you'll be asked: «Tap the count where the loop ENDS».
-
Mark where it ends
Tap the count where it ends. That section turns yellow, the line above tells you how many counts it has («Loop: 16 counts») and the video jumps to the start of the loop and repeats just that part.
-
Remove it whenever you like
Remove loop brings back the whole video.
Camera mode (Pro)
Camera mode shows you next to the tutorial, live, so you can compare your movement with the teacher's while you practise.
-
Turn it on
Below the video, press the big Camera mode button. Your browser will ask for permission the first time.
-
Get in frame
You appear next to the video, mirrored. If the video is landscape and your phone is upright, you appear below it. The count, the stamp and the MIRROR badge stay on the teacher's panel.
-
Turn it off
While it's on, the button says Camera live; tap it to turn it off. It also switches off by itself when you leave step 3 or press Another video.
Your camera only shows on your screen: nothing is recorded or sent, and it isn't in the video you export. On Free the button shows a padlock and takes you to the plans.
Zoom and fullscreen
Each panel (the tutorial and your camera) has its own zoom, so you can get close to the teacher's feet or hands:
On your phone: pinch with two fingers to zoom in, drag to frame it and double tap to see the whole picture again. On a computer: Zoom in (+) and Zoom out (−) in the corner of the panel, or pinch on the trackpad; drag to frame it and double click (or press Show whole, ⟲) to go back.
When you get to step 3 it reminds you over the video until you press play. Zoom is just for practising: it doesn't change the video you export, and the count display doesn't zoom with it.
Fullscreen: the button at the top left of the video. With camera mode on, the screen splits in two (top and bottom when upright). On an iPhone, which doesn't allow a video like this in true fullscreen, the app fills the whole screen anyway.
Exporting the video
When you like how it looks, you can export it as a video to keep or post.
-
Check what you'll get
Next to the button there's a summary: the marked loop or the whole video, the speed, mirrored or normal, and with or without counts. What you see is what you get.
-
Pick the quality (videos above 1080p)
If your video is above 1080p (a 4K phone video, for example), step 3's settings show Quality: 1080p or Original (up to 4K). The second one is Pro; on Free it shows a padlock. If your video is 1080p or less, it doesn't appear: it already exports at its own quality.
-
Press Export video
Press Export video. It records in real time: it takes as long as the video lasts (at ×0.5, twice as long). You'll see the bar «Recording the tutorial (in real time)…».
-
Download it
When it's done, Download appears with the file name (for example, my-choreo-tutorial-x05.mp4). It comes out as mp4; if your browser can't record mp4, as webm.
To export you need your UTOPIC account: without it, the button says Log in. It comes out at your video's own quality, never upscaled: on Free, up to 1080p (a 720p video comes out at 720p) and with the stamp; with Pro, with no stamp if you like and, if the original is above 1080p, at its original quality, up to 4K. On Free you get 4 videos a month in this app; with Pro, unlimited. Exporting the same video again without closing it doesn't use up another one.
The Free plan stamp
On Free, the video carries the UTOPIC emblem and the link utopicdance.com/tutorialize at the top centre, for the whole video. It's no surprise when you download: you already see it on step 3, in the same place and with the same look.
With Pro, Settings has a Logo checkbox: untick it and the stamp disappears from the view and from the video. On Free, a No logo chip with a padlock sits there instead and takes you to the plans.
On your phone
Tutorialize works the same on your phone: the video on top, the settings below and the strip of counts to swipe with your finger. On step 2, the big tap button spans the width of the screen.
If you'll use it often, the Install button on the app page adds it to your home screen with its own icon.

FAQ
Do I need an account to use Tutorialize?
Not to try it: the first time you come in from a browser, the visit is free until you close the tab. To come back and to export the video, you need your UTOPIC account, which is free (and comes with 1 month of Pro).
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Tutorialize opens, analyses and records it in your own browser. We only count how many videos you export, for the Free plan limit.
Why do I have to set the tempo myself?
Because you know the «1» of a choreo better than anyone. You tap the beat 8 times and Tutorialize snaps each tap to a hit in the music; then you can fine-tune it with − and +.
Does the music sound lower when I slow it down?
No. The speed changes without touching the pitch: at ×0.5 the song sounds the same, just at half speed. In the exported video too.
Why does exporting take a while?
Because it records in real time in your browser: it takes as long as the video at the speed you picked. Keep the tab visible while it records.
Is my camera recorded?
No. Camera mode (Pro) only shows you, on your own screen, next to the tutorial. Nothing is recorded or sent, and it isn't in the video you export.
How many videos can I export?
On Free, 4 a month in Tutorialize (the other video apps have their own 4), at your video's quality up to 1080p and with the UTOPIC stamp. With Pro, unlimited, with no stamp if you like and, if the original is above 1080p, at its original quality up to 4K.
