Freestyle Game guide
Freestyle Game is four decks of improv cards: draw one, read the prompt and dance it. Here you'll learn to draw and combine cards, use the timer, play to a beat that switches cards on its own and, with Pro, build your own decks. You can play the demo right on this page.
Contents What Freestyle Game is
What Freestyle Game is
Freestyle Game is a card game for your freestyle sessions. There are four decks of 30 cards: Body (blue), Space (coral), Dynamics & rhythm (yellow) and Concept (navy). Tap a deck, it flips, a prompt comes up and you dance it.
It works for training on your own, for a class or for a group round: every card pulls you out of your usual moves. Below there's a timer and, if you like, a beat that plays in the background and switches the cards for you.
The first time you come in from a browser you don't need to sign up: the visit is free until you close the tab. To come back and save your decks to your account, create one for free (and get 1 month of Pro).
Draw and swap cards
-
Tap a deck
Tap a deck (Tap to draw a card): it flips and shows you a card, with the prompt in big letters and a short explanation below.
-
Swap it
Tap the card (Tap the card for another) and you get another from the same deck; the previous one lifts away. You never get the same card twice in a row.
-
Combine decks
You can have all four open at once: for example, a Body card and a Dynamics & rhythm card, and you dance both together.
-
Change all or close
New cards swaps every open card at once. The X on each card closes that deck (it flips back) and Close all closes them all.
The four decks
Body (blue): where the movement starts. Isolations (head, shoulders, chest, hips, wrists…) and moving from one specific part, like your head or your navel.
Space (coral): where you move. Levels (floor, mid, jumps), diagonals, circles and spirals, corners, staying on one spot or travelling everywhere.
Dynamics & rhythm (yellow): how you move. Slow motion, explosive, gradually speeding up, stopping suddenly, freezing, sharp, smooth, robotic, liquid… and playing with timing (on the beat, double time, half time).
Concept (navy): what you express. Emotions (joy, rage, fear, nostalgia), images (you are water, you are fire) and little stories.
On Free you play with 10 cards from each deck; with Pro, with all 30 in each (120 in total) plus the ones you write.
The timer
Below the decks is the console, with the Timer in big numbers. It's great for rounds: one minute per person, two minutes per card…
-
Choose the length
Tap 1, 2, 3, 5 or 8 min, or adjust it in 30-second steps with − and + (from 30 seconds to 60 minutes). It starts at 2 minutes.
-
Start
Press Start. While it runs, the button says Pause; if you stop, Resume carries on where you left off and Reset puts it back to the start.
-
Watch the end
In the last 10 seconds the numbers turn yellow. When it hits zero, three beeps sound, the console flashes and, if a beat was playing, it stops.
While the timer runs, your phone's screen stays on (if your browser allows it).
Playing with a beat
Tick With a beat and a My Base beat plays in the background while you improvise. That way you practise with music and in time, without hunting for songs.
-
Choose the beat
Tap one of the example beats: Boom bap and Basic on Free; with Pro, also Old school, Lo-fi and Trap. Each one sets its own tempo.
-
Set the tempo
Type the BPM or use the slider: 60 to 160.
-
Choose the card change
In Card change: By hand (you change them), every eight, every 2 eights or every 4 eights. Only the cards in your open decks change.
-
Press Start
Start starts the timer and the beat together. The eight dots on the console show the count, from 1 to 8.
Your My Base beats
The beats you save in My Base show up here, in My beats, on Free too. Tap one and it plays in full, with all its eights: if your beat has four different eights, all four play in a row and loop.
The card change counts every 8 that goes by, even if your beat has several eights: with every 2 eights, the card changes every two eights of the beat, without waiting for it to loop back to the start.
On Free, your beats play with the Boom bap kit and only kick, snare and hi-hat. With Pro, with their own kit and all their sounds.
If you don't have any yet, you'll see Open My Base: build one there, save it and come back.
Your song (Pro)
With Pro you can play to your own song instead of a beat: the cards change to its rhythm just like with a beat.
-
Upload it
With With a beat ticked, tap Upload song and pick the file. The song stays in this browser: it isn't uploaded anywhere and doesn't go to your account.
-
Tap the tempo
Press Tap the tempo: the song starts from the beginning. Tap the button to the beat 8 times (Tap along · 0/8 keeps count); the first tap is the “1”.
-
Fine-tune it
If needed, correct the BPM with − and + or type it.
-
Play
Choose the Card change and press Start: the song starts on your “1” (and starts over when it ends) and the cards change to its rhythm.
To use another one, tap Upload song again; to go back to the beats, tap Remove. The song and its tempo are remembered in this browser next time you come in.
Configure decks (Pro)
With Pro, the Configure decks tab lets you decide which cards play in each deck and write your own. Pick the deck at the top and you'll see how many cards are active.
-
Write your cards
In Your cards, type the prompt (and a description, if you like) and press Add. You can edit it later in the same list or delete it with the bin.
-
Hide the ones you don't want
Deck cards has the 30 built-in cards: Hide takes one out of play and Show brings it back.
-
Back to playing
Press Play: your cards come up shuffled in with the rest of the deck.
Your decks are saved to your account: you have them on any phone or computer you sign in on.
On your phone
On your phone the decks sit in two columns with the console below. With the timer running the screen stays on, so you can put your phone on the floor and dance.
If you'll use it often, the Install button on the app page adds it to your home screen with its own icon.

FAQ
Do I need an account to play?
Not the first time you come in from a browser: the visit is free until you close the tab. To come back and save your decks to your account, create one for free (and get 1 month of Pro).
How many cards are there?
120, in four decks of 30: Body, Space, Dynamics & rhythm, and Concept. On Free you play with 10 from each deck; with Pro, with all of them.
Can I write my own cards?
Yes, with Pro: in Configure decks you add your own to any deck and hide the ones you don't want. They're saved to your account.
Can I play with the beats I made in My Base?
Yes, on Free too: they show up in My beats and play in full, with all their eights. On Free they play with the kick, snare and hi-hat of the Boom bap kit; with Pro, with their own kit and every sound.
Is my song uploaded anywhere?
No. With Pro you add it to play, but it's only stored in that browser; it doesn't go to your account or any server.
How do I make the cards change on their own?
Tick With a beat, choose every eight, every 2 eights or every 4 eights in Card change, open the decks you want and press Start. Only open cards change.
Does the beat play on an iPhone in silent mode?
Yes: Freestyle Game tells the iPhone it's playing music, so the beat plays even with silent mode on. If you can't hear anything, turn the volume up and press Start again; only iPhones on an old iOS need silent mode turned off.
